*THE KUMASI SYMPOSIUM
Tapping Local Resources for Sustainable Education through Art
Department of General Art Studies, College of Arts and Social Sciences
Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) Kumasi, Ghana
July 31-August 14, 2009
project curating/developing/documenting/presenting & lecture plus artist presentation
The symposium is a partnership between AfriCOAE and the Department of General Art Studies, College of Arts and Social Sciences, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Kumasi.
"Bello`s work concepts compliment our approach to build a bridge between community and university/art-students and artists. The Symposium looks for a confrontation with local resources and how artistic interventions can help to work through problems, which address and concern the whole community. A few components will form this year≠s Symposium. We expect Bello's project to develop and document a process and structure of own/others' practice in context of The Kumasi Symposium. The project will also help to guide local artists in setting up the Curio Kiosk, which will be a place to act as communication centre between artists and non-artistic people from the community. This centre is proposed to act as an open forum to make communication happen on different levels. We expect Bello's project during the Symposium to receive significant attention from international visiting artists and other art workers but especially from the local community of Kumasi. The results will be shared in the symposium. Through Bello`s previous work we expect his project to lead to significant discussion. Our expectations are that Mr Benischauer`s skills and experience/interests will bring new insight into the Symposium. We also expect that his project will enable local artists to develop similar projects with an intervention approach in future years. "
