This audio-visual installation tells a story about me asking a man to visit his private house in Kumasi, Ghana. I was talking to the Father of a young child, who was sitting on the floor eating his lunch. Occupied with the eating process it did not recognise me, only the camera that I had placed in its direction to film it sitting there. I came around the camera and had to lift some hanging sheets to say hello to this child. Me doing that it looked up, screamed out but immediately went back to eating, calm and focussed on taking food out of its bowl. The child may not have seen a white man before or was just not used to white-skinned people being around the family home.
My travel to Ghana was getting me back into the shocking reality of so many people on this planet. Even if I lived in the so-called Third World for years and travelled through countries that do not provide such fortunate conditions like the Western World, I found it hard this time to accommodate to these unbelievable ways of living. Not having i.e. running water or a continuous power supply are things that seem so basic to us, we just take them for granted. This installation-piece should remind us that there are many people in this world and most of them in the need of basic living conditions, which we have already forgotten under a mountain of consumed goods that we collect, cummulate, waste. We are simply not the centre of this world!
